NFRA’s Radio Observatory: Policies and Procedures
نویسنده
چکیده
Since the end of 1999 there has been a brand new WSRT standing in the community of Hooghalen, The Netherlands. Although the Upgrade of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope is not totally completed, major parts of all the envisioned state-of-the-art systems have been installed and are operating. This Newsletter is designed to let the national and international astronomy community know about the current state of affairs at the WSRT and how users may use this facility in the coming years.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملPeriodic Bursts of Coherent Radio Emission from an Ultracool Dwarf
We report the detection of periodic (p = 1.96 hours) bursts of extremely bright, 100% circularly polarized, coherent radio emission from the M9 dwarf TVLM 513-46546. Simultaneous photometric monitoring observations have established this periodicity to be the rotation period of the dwarf. These bursts, which were not present in previous observations of this target, confirm that ultracool dwarfs ...
متن کاملMaraghe Observatory and an Effort towards Retrieval of Architectural Design of Astronomical Units
Maraghe observatory was built by such engineers as Moayiededdin Orozi etc. under supervision of Khaje Nasireddin Tousi in 7th century AH. The most significant feature associated with Maraghe observatory is the fact that architecture is employed to achieve astronomical purposes in this site. The reason for preferring observatory by astronomers was the fact that these units are superior to wooden...
متن کاملThe Technology Challenge for the next Generation Radio Telescopes
At the occasion of NFRA’s 50-th celebration, at the time the Westerbork upgrade is nearing its completion and the dawn of this century, it seemed appropriate to orient toward the instruments for radioastronomy that will lead the onset of the next century. The most ambitious and far reaching instrument now generally become known as the Square Kilometre Array [1], will concentrate on the science ...
متن کاملThe Rapidly Fading Afterglow from the Gamma - Ray Burst of 1999
We report on the discovery of the radio afterglow from the gamma-ray burst (GRB) of 1999 May 6 (GRB 990506) using the Very Large Array (VLA). The radio afterglow was detected at early times (∆t = 1.5 days), but began to fade rapidly sometime between 1 and 5 days after the burst. If we attribute the radio emission to the forward shock from an expanding fireball, then this rapid onset of the deca...
